Gurgaddi Diwas of Sri Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji commemorates the day he was installed as the sixth Guru of the Sikhs, assuming the spiritual and temporal leadership of the Panth after the martyrdom of his father, Sri Guru Arjan Sahib Ji.

Gurgaddi Diwas of Sri Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji

In Sikh history, the Gurgaddi Diwas (the anniversary of assumption of the Guru's throne) holds special significance. This sacred day is observed in remembrance of Sri Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji's installation as the sixth Guru of the Sikhs. Sri Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji was the son of Sri Guru Arjan Sahib Ji and Mata Ganga Ji, and was born at Wadali. After the martyrdom of his father, he assumed the service and responsibility of the divine light of Guru Nanak Sahib Ji.

Historical Background

In 1606 CE, after the martyrdom of Sri Guru Arjan Sahib Ji, the Sikh community was plunged into deep grief and faced immense challenges. Sri Guru Arjan Sahib Ji, the fifth Guru, had been tortured and executed under the orders of the Mughal Emperor Jahangir. At that critical juncture, the Sikh Sangat looked toward the young Hargobind, then only eleven years old, as the rightful successor. Before his martyrdom, Sri Guru Arjan Sahib Ji had already indicated that his son Hargobind would carry forward the spiritual mission. Thus, on the day of Gurgaddi, Sri Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji was formally installed as the sixth Guru.

The ceremony took place in the presence of the Sikh Sangat, and Bhai Budha Ji, a revered elder and the first Granthi of Sri Harmandir Sahib, performed the traditional tilak ceremony, applying the sacred mark on the forehead of the young Guru. This moment marked the continuation of the unbroken chain of Guruship from Guru Nanak Sahib Ji. Sri Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji, however, introduced a significant transformation in the nature of Sikh leadership. He adopted the concept of Miri-Piri, symbolizing the dual authority of spiritual and temporal domains. He wore two swords, one representing spiritual power (Piri) and the other temporal power (Miri), and built the Akal Takht in front of Sri Harmandir Sahib as the seat of temporal authority.

The Gurgaddi Diwas of Sri Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji is therefore not merely a commemoration of an installation; it marks a pivotal turning point in Sikh history. It reminds the Sikhs of the Guru's courage, sovereignty, and the responsibility to stand against oppression while remaining rooted in spirituality. On this day, Sikhs gather in Gurdwaras to offer prayers, recite Gurbani, and reflect on the Guru's teachings. Kirtan and Katha are performed, and langar is served to all. The day inspires the Sikh community to uphold the ideals of justice, dignity, and devotion as exemplified by Sri Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji.
