Gurgaddi Diwas of Sri Guru Har Rai Sahib Ji

In Sikh history, the Prakash and Gurgaddi Diwas of Sri Guru Har Rai Sahib Ji hold a most sacred and revered place. Sri Guru Har Rai Sahib Ji was the seventh Guru of the Sikhs, born in 1630 CE at Kiratpur Sahib. His father was Baba Gurditta Ji, the son of Sri Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji, and his mother was Mata Nihal Kaur Ji.

Historical Background

Before Sri Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji merged into the Divine Light, he had already indicated that his grandson, Har Rai, would be his successor. Sri Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji recognized the deep spiritual qualities, humility, and devotion of the young Har Rai. Thus, on the day of his passing, he formally installed Sri Guru Har Rai Sahib Ji as the seventh Guru. This event is celebrated as Gurgaddi Diwas, the day of assumption of the Guruship.

Sri Guru Har Rai Sahib Ji was a young boy when he received the Guruship, yet he carried the spiritual mantle with remarkable grace and wisdom. He was known for his gentle nature, profound compassion, and unwavering commitment to the Sikh faith. His Guruship period was marked by peace, spiritual growth, and the expansion of the Sikh community.

Spiritual Legacy

Sri Guru Har Rai Sahib Ji emphasized the importance of Naam Simran, selfless service, and devotion to the Guru. He established many new preaching centers and sent Sikh missionaries to spread the teachings of Guru Nanak Dev Ji. His court at Kiratpur Sahib became a center of spiritual learning and refuge for the oppressed.

One of the most notable aspects of his Guruship was his deep love for nature and animals. He established a herbal garden and dispensary at Kiratpur Sahib, where he personally tended to the sick and provided free medicine to all. This practice reflected the Sikh principle of selfless service and compassion for all creation.

Sri Guru Har Rai Sahib Ji also maintained a strong military presence, following in the footsteps of his grandfather, Sri Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji. However, he never engaged in aggressive warfare; his army was primarily for defensive purposes and to protect the weak. He believed in resolving conflicts through peaceful means whenever possible.

Celebration of Gurgaddi Diwas

The Gurgaddi Diwas of Sri Guru Har Rai Sahib Ji is observed with great devotion by Sikhs around the world. The day typically begins with an Akhand Path, a continuous reading of the Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji, followed by Kirtan, Katha, and Ardas. Sikhs gather in Gurdwaras to listen to the life and teachings of the Guru and to seek his blessings.

Langar is served to all, and many Sikhs participate in Seva, selfless service, in honor of the Guru's legacy of compassion. The celebration is not merely a historical commemoration but a living reminder of the Guru's message of love, service, and devotion to the Divine.

The Gurgaddi Diwas of Sri Guru Har Rai Sahib Ji inspires Sikhs to walk on the path of humility, compassion, and spiritual discipline. It reminds us of the enduring light of the Gurus and the timeless relevance of their teachings in our lives.
