Birth Anniversary of Baba Deep Singh Ji

In Sikh history, the name of Baba Deep Singh Ji is held in the highest esteem as an immortal martyr and a great Gursikh. He was born in 1682 CE in the village of Pahuwind, District Amritsar, Punjab. His father was Bhai Bhagta Ji and his mother was Mata Jiooni Ji. From childhood, he was inclined toward a religious life and longed for the darshan of Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji.

Presence at the Guru's Feet

Baba Deep Singh Ji reached Anandpur Sahib and presented himself before Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji. The Guru, pleased with his devotion and sincerity, accepted him as a disciple and began to instruct him in both spiritual and martial disciplines. Baba Deep Singh Ji learned Gurbani, the art of warfare, horsemanship, and the use of weapons. He became one of the most trusted and learned Sikhs of the Guru.

Service and Scholarship

Baba Deep Singh Ji was among the first five Sikhs to be initiated into the Khalsa by Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji at the historic Vaisakhi of 1699. He was a renowned scholar and scribe. He prepared copies of the Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji with his own hand and was appointed as the first Jathedar of Sri Damdama Sahib, Talwandi Sabo. There he taught Gurbani and trained Sikhs in the martial arts. He also served as a missionary, spreading the message of the Gurus in various regions.

Martyrdom at Amritsar

In 1757 CE, Ahmad Shah Abdali's forces and their local allies desecrated the sacred Sarovar of Sri Harmandir Sahib in Amritsar. When Baba Deep Singh Ji, then in his seventies, learned of this sacrilege, he vowed to liberate the holy city and restore the sanctity of the shrine. He gathered a large body of Sikhs and marched toward Amritsar. In the fierce battle that ensued at the outskirts of Amritsar, Baba Deep Singh Ji fought with extraordinary courage. According to Sikh tradition, he was mortally wounded, yet he continued to fight, holding his severed head in one hand and wielding his sword with the other, until he reached the precincts of Sri Harmandir Sahib and breathed his last. His sacrifice became an enduring symbol of devotion and bravery.

Legacy and Commemoration

The birth anniversary of Baba Deep Singh Ji is observed with deep reverence by Sikhs around the world. On this day, devotees gather in Gurdwaras to recite Gurbani, hold Akhand Paths, and reflect on his life of scholarship, service, and supreme sacrifice. His example inspires Sikhs to uphold the values of the Khalsa: devotion to Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji, selfless service, and readiness to defend the faith and the oppressed. The memory of Baba Deep Singh Ji continues to shine as a beacon of courage and commitment for generations of Sikhs.
