Among them, the Parkash Gurpurab of Sri Guru Arjan Dev Sahib Ji is an extremely important and sacred day in Sikh history, celebrated with great devotion and enthusiasm by the entire Sikh world.

Historical Background

The Parkash (birth) of Sri Guru Arjan Dev Sahib Ji took place in 1563 CE at Goindwal Sahib. He was the youngest son of Sri Guru Ram Das Sahib Ji and Mata Bhani Ji. From a very young age, Guru Arjan Dev Sahib Ji exhibited profound spiritual wisdom, humility, and a deep commitment to the Sikh faith. He was installed as the fifth Guru in 1581 CE, following the passing of his father, Sri Guru Ram Das Sahib Ji.

Sri Guru Arjan Dev Sahib Ji's tenure as Guru was marked by immense contributions to the Sikh tradition. He compiled the Adi Granth, the first official scripture of Sikhism, which later became the Guru Granth Sahib. He collected the hymns of the previous Gurus and various saints, and composed his own profound verses, including the Sukhmani Sahib. He also completed the construction of the Harmandir Sahib (Golden Temple) in Amritsar, laying its foundation through the Muslim saint Hazrat Mian Mir Ji, symbolizing universal brotherhood and equality.

Guru Ji emphasized the importance of selfless service (seva), meditation on the Divine Name (Naam Japna), and honest living. He established the town of Tarn Taran and numerous other centers of Sikh learning and worship. His teachings stressed inner devotion over outer rituals and the equality of all human beings, regardless of caste, creed, or gender.

In 1606 CE, Sri Guru Arjan Dev Sahib Ji attained martyrdom, becoming the first Sikh Guru to sacrifice his life for the faith. He was tortured under the orders of the Mughal Emperor Jahangir, enduring immense suffering with calmness and fortitude, embodying the Sikh spirit of sacrifice and resilience. His martyrdom is remembered as a pivotal moment in Sikh history, reinforcing the principles of courage, faith, and standing against oppression.

Observance of the Parkash Gurpurab
