Parkash Gurpurab of Sri Guru Ramdas Sahib Ji

Historical Background

Sri Guru Ramdas Sahib Ji was born on Assu Vadi Dooj in the year 1591 Bikrami (corresponding to 1534 CE) at Sri Goindwal Sahib. He was the son of Sri Hari Das Ji and Mata Daya Kaur Ji. From his very childhood, he exhibited deep spiritual inclination, humility, and a spirit of service. He spent his early years in devoted service, particularly in the langar (community kitchen) at Goindwal Sahib, where he served the sangats with utmost dedication under the guidance of Sri Guru Amar Das Sahib Ji.

Sri Guru Ramdas Sahib Ji's devotion and selfless service deeply pleased Sri Guru Amar Das Sahib Ji, who eventually installed him as the fourth Guru of the Sikh Panth in 1574 CE. As Guru, Sri Guru Ramdas Sahib Ji continued the mission of his predecessors, strengthening the institutions of Sikhism. He founded the city of Ramdaspur, which later came to be known as Amritsar, and initiated the excavation of the sacred sarovar (holy tank) that surrounds the Harmandir Sahib. He invited traders and artisans from various regions to settle in the new city, laying the foundation for a thriving spiritual and commercial center.

Sri Guru Ramdas Sahib Ji composed 638 hymns in 30 ragas, which are included in the Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji. His compositions, particularly the Lawan (the four marriage hymns), hold a central place in Sikh ceremonies. He emphasized the importance of the Guru's word, the congregation (sangat), and selfless service as the path to spiritual liberation.
