The martyrdom day of Shaheed-e-Azam Sardar Bhagat Singh Ji, commemorating his supreme sacrifice for India's freedom on March 23, 1931.

Martyrdom Day of Sardar Bhagat Singh Ji

Shaheed-e-Azam Sardar Bhagat Singh Ji was born on September 28, 1907, in the village of Chak No. 105, Lyallpur (now in Faisalabad District, Pakistan). His father was Sardar Kishan Singh Ji and his mother was Srimati Vidyavati Ji. His family was deeply imbued with the spirit of patriotism, and from childhood a intense desire for the freedom of the country arose in his mind.

Historical Background

He received his early education at National College, Lahore. At that time, the country was under British rule, and the freedom movement was gaining momentum. Influenced by the Jallianwala Bagh massacre and the sacrifices of freedom fighters, Bhagat Singh Ji dedicated his life to the cause of India's independence. He joined the Hindustan Socialist Republican Association (HSRA) and became a prominent revolutionary leader.

In 1928, Bhagat Singh Ji and his associates were involved in the killing of British police officer John Saunders to avenge the death of Lala Lajpat Rai Ji. Later, in 1929, he and Batukeshwar Dutt threw bombs in the Central Legislative Assembly to protest against the Public Safety Bill and Trade Disputes Bill. They intentionally courted arrest to use the trial as a platform to spread their message of revolution. During his imprisonment, Bhagat Singh Ji undertook a historic hunger strike to demand better conditions for political prisoners and equal rights for Indian and European prisoners.

The trial of Bhagat Singh Ji, Sukhdev Ji, and Rajguru Ji was conducted in the Lahore Conspiracy Case. Despite widespread public sympathy and appeals for mercy, the British government remained adamant. On March 23, 1931, Bhagat Singh Ji, Sukhdev Ji, and Rajguru Ji were hanged in Lahore Central Jail. Their sacrifice sent shockwaves across the nation and inspired countless others to join the freedom struggle.

Bhagat Singh Ji was not only a revolutionary but also a deep thinker. His writings, including 'Why I Am an Atheist', reflect his commitment to rationalism and social justice. He envisioned a free India based on equality and freedom from exploitation. His martyrdom day is observed every year on March 23 as a day of remembrance and inspiration. Sikhs and Indians alike pay homage to his supreme sacrifice, recalling his famous slogan, 'Inquilab Zindabad' (Long Live the Revolution).

The martyrdom of Sardar Bhagat Singh Ji remains a shining example of courage, patriotism, and selfless service to the nation. His life and sacrifice continue to inspire generations to strive for justice and freedom.
