The Martyrdom Day of Shaheed Sardar Udham Singh Ji commemorates the supreme sacrifice of the Sikh revolutionary who avenged the Jallianwala Bagh massacre.

Martyrdom Day of S. Udham Singh

In Sikh history, there have been countless great warriors who, through their immortal sacrifices, brought honor to the community. Among them is the revered name of S. Udham Singh Ji, whose martyrdom day is a source of eternal inspiration for the Sikh nation.

Historical Background

S. Udham Singh Ji was born in 1859 CE in the village of Sunam, District Sangrur (Patiala State). His father was S. Tehal Singh Ji. From childhood, the qualities of service to the Guru's house, humility, and fearlessness were evident in him. He received education in Gurmukhi and Sikh scriptures at the village Gurdwara. In his youth, he joined the British Indian Army, where he served with dedication and discipline. However, the Jallianwala Bagh massacre of 1919, in which hundreds of innocent Sikhs and Indians were killed under the orders of General Dyer, deeply moved him and ignited a fire of resistance against British tyranny.

After leaving the army, S. Udham Singh Ji became actively involved in the Ghadar Movement and other revolutionary activities aimed at freeing India from British rule. He traveled to various countries, including the United States, Canada, and England, to mobilize support for India's independence. He was a devout Sikh who always wore a turban and kept the five Ks, and he drew inspiration from the teachings of Guru Nanak Dev Ji and Guru Gobind Singh Ji.

The Martyrdom

On 13 March 1940, S. Udham Singh Ji shot and killed Sir Michael O'Dwyer, the former Lieutenant Governor of Punjab who had endorsed the Jallianwala Bagh massacre, at Caxton Hall in London. He did not attempt to escape and was arrested on the spot. During his trial, he boldly declared that he had taken revenge for the blood of his innocent brothers and sisters. He was sentenced to death and hanged on 31 July 1940 at Pentonville Prison, London. He embraced martyrdom with the sacred name of Waheguru on his lips, attaining the status of a Shaheed.

Legacy and Commemoration

The martyrdom day of S. Udham Singh Ji is observed with deep reverence by the Sikh community and all Indians. On this day, Sikhs gather in Gurdwaras to offer prayers, recite Kirtan, and remember his sacrifice. His life teaches us that true courage lies in standing against injustice and oppression, and that the love for one's faith and country is greater than life itself. His martyrdom continues to inspire generations to uphold the values of justice, equality, and freedom.
