The martyrdom anniversary of Sri Guru Arjan Dev Sahib Ji, the fifth Sikh Guru — the first martyrdom in Sikh history.

Martyrdom Anniversary of Sri Guru Arjan Dev Sahib Ji

The martyrdom anniversary of Sri Guru Arjan Dev Sahib Ji holds a most sacred and emotional place in Sikh history. Sri Guru Arjan Dev Sahib Ji was the fifth Guru of the Sikh faith, who made invaluable contributions to the preaching and spread of Sikhism. He compiled Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji and provided the Sikh community with a scriptural scripture.

Historical Background

Sri Guru Arjan Dev Sahib Ji was born in 1563 CE at Goindwal Sahib. His father was the fourth Guru, Sri Guru Ram Das Sahib Ji, and his mother was Mata Bhani Ji. From a young age, he was devoted to spiritual pursuits and service. He was married to Mata Ganga Ji, and their son, Sri Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji, later became the sixth Guru.

Sri Guru Arjan Dev Sahib Ji was installed as Guru in 1581 CE. He undertook numerous initiatives for the welfare of the Sikh community. He founded the city of Amritsar and constructed the Harmandir Sahib (Golden Temple) at its center, with its foundation stone laid by the Sufi saint Hazrat Mian Mir Ji. He also established the town of Tarn Taran and other settlements.

His most significant contribution was the compilation of the Adi Granth, the first edition of the Sikh scriptures. He collected the hymns of the first four Gurus, his own compositions, and the writings of various Bhagats and saints from different backgrounds, emphasizing the universality of spiritual wisdom. This scripture was installed in the Harmandir Sahib in 1604 CE.

Circumstances of Martyrdom

During that period, the Mughal Emperor Jahangir was influenced by courtiers and religious authorities who were opposed to the growing influence of the Sikh faith. They perceived Sri Guru Arjan Dev Sahib Ji's spiritual authority and popularity as a threat. False allegations were made against him, and he was summoned to Lahore.

Sri Guru Arjan Dev Sahib Ji was subjected to severe torture. He was made to sit on a hot iron plate, and hot sand was poured over his body. Despite immense physical suffering, he remained calm and composed, meditating on the Divine and accepting the Will of God. He attained martyrdom on 30 May 1606 CE (according to some traditions, in the month of Jeth) in Lahore.

His martyrdom is regarded as the first martyrdom in Sikh history. It marked a turning point, as it demonstrated the Sikh Gurus' commitment to justice, truth, and freedom of conscience. Sri Guru Arjan Dev Sahib Ji's sacrifice inspired the Sikh community to stand against oppression and tyranny.

Observance and Significance

The martyrdom anniversary, known as Shahidi Gurpurab, is observed with deep reverence. Sikhs gather in Gurdwaras for Akhand Path (continuous reading of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji), Kirtan (devotional singing), and Katha (discourses). The life and sacrifice of Sri Guru Arjan Dev Sahib Ji are remembered, and his teachings of humility, service, and devotion are emphasized.

This day reminds Sikhs of the cost of spiritual freedom and the importance of standing firm in their faith. It also highlights the message that true spiritual strength lies in remaining connected to the Divine even in the face of extreme adversity. The martyrdom of Sri Guru Arjan Dev Sahib Ji continues to inspire millions around the world.
