The Martyrdom Jor Mela of Sri Muktsar Sahib is an annual Sikh gathering held in the month of Magh to commemorate the supreme sacrifice of the Forty Muktas (liberated ones) who laid down their lives for righteousness and humanity.

Martyrdom Jor Mela Sri Muktsar Sahib

The sacred land of Sri Muktsar Sahib holds a unique place in Sikh history as a symbol of unparalleled sacrifice. Every year, on the first day of the month of Magh, the Shahidi Jor Mela (Martyrdom Fair) is observed here with deep reverence and enthusiasm. This gathering honors the great martyrs who gave their lives for the protection of faith and humanity.

Historical Background

In 1705 CE, Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji Maharaj, while traveling through the forests after the evacuation of Anandpur Sahib, reached the area of Sri Muktsar Sahib. At that time, the Mughal forces were pursuing the Guru's party from four directions. The Guru was accompanied by a small number of devoted Sikhs. Among them were forty Sikhs from the Majha region who had earlier deserted the Guru at Anandpur Sahib under pressure from their families. They had signed a disclaimer (bedava) disowning the Guru. However, upon reaching their homes, they were deeply remorseful. Their conscience pricked them, and they decided to return to the Guru's presence to seek forgiveness and to fight for him.

Led by Bhai Maha Singh Ji, these forty Sikhs found the Guru at Sri Muktsar Sahib. They fell at his feet and begged for forgiveness. Guru Ji forgave them and blessed them. Soon, the Mughal army, led by Wazir Khan, attacked the Guru's camp. The forty Sikhs, now known as the Chali Mukte (the Forty Liberated Ones), fought valiantly alongside the Guru. They all attained martyrdom in the fierce battle, but not before inflicting heavy losses on the enemy. Bhai Maha Singh Ji, the leader, was the last to fall. When Guru Ji asked him if he had any last wish, he requested that the bedava (disclaimer) be torn, symbolizing their forgiveness and reunion with the Guru. Guru Gobind Singh Ji tore the document and blessed them as his beloved Sikhs.

Significance of the Jor Mela

The Shahidi Jor Mela commemorates this historic event. It is held annually at Sri Muktsar Sahib, where a large fair takes place. Sikhs from all over the world gather to pay homage to the Forty Muktas. The Guru himself is said to have performed the last rites of the martyrs and blessed the site. The Mela includes religious processions, kirtan, and recitation of Gurbani. It serves as a reminder of the values of sacrifice, loyalty, and the unbreakable bond between the Guru and his Sikhs. The event also highlights the importance of forgiveness and redemption, as the Forty Muktas were forgiven and honored by the Guru.

Observance

The Jor Mela is celebrated with great devotion. Devotees take a holy dip in the sacred tank (sarovar) at Sri Muktsar Sahib, which is believed to have healing properties. The Guru's presence and the martyrdom of the Forty Muktas make this place a cherished pilgrimage site. The fair lasts for several days, with the main event on the first of Magh. It is a time for the Sikh community to reflect on the teachings of the Gurus and to renew their commitment to the faith. The Shahidi Jor Mela is not just a fair but a profound spiritual gathering that keeps alive the memory of the supreme sacrifice made by the Forty Muktas and the boundless grace of Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji.
